Throughout the poems, Kaye is bullied or embarrassed of how different he is to his classmates and friends. In school they make fun of the fact that he is Asian, and this seems to make him self-conscious. It seems that he is very insecure because of them too. He has accepted his differences or embraced them because it does not seem that he has a support system to help get him get past them. I have seen that if a person does have a support system or is around people who are accepting of their differences, they are not insecure about them. I think that maybe if Kaye had surrounded himself with people who were similar to him growing up, he might not have been picked on as much, or might not have these insecurities about himself
This semester not only am I doing a service track at Bridges, but I am doing a field experience for my Special Education class at Baltimore Lab School. Baltimore Lab is a school specifically set up for children with special needs. Their needs are not very severe, but the majority of the students are diagnosed with anything from ADHD to Autism. Students are usually sent to Baltimore Lab by their local school district, because the district and the child’s parents think that they can get the most out of their education from being in a setting with people who tailor a lesson to the students needs and be with other students who face similar challenges. From the few times that I’ve been to my field, I have noticed that none of the students feel left out in a classroom. Everyone gets along with each other, and students seem to succeed in the classroom. I have never seen a student pick on or tease another student for a flaw or struggle that they have in the classroom. They seem to support each other, and the staff is very supportive of these students as well.
